Peplink Powered: Innoptus Solar Team Crosses the Australian Outback

The Australian outback is 1,877 miles of heat, dust and no signal. Frontier EU kept the Innoptus Solar Team connected for every single mile of it.

A Race Across the World's Most Unforgiving Terrain

1,877 miles. Blistering heat. Hundreds of kilometres without a single bar of signal. The Australian outback doesn’t exactly roll out the welcome mat, and yet, every two years, the world’s best solar racing teams drive straight through it.

The Innoptus Solar Team is a Belgian student engineering group that builds and races solar-powered cars. Each year, a completely new team takes over, designs a new car, and takes it to international competition. In 2025, they set their sights on the Bridgestone World Solar Challenge, and they needed their connectivity to be bulletproof.

That’s where Frontier EU came in.

The Problem: No Signal, No Strategy

The solar car doesn’t just drive. It constantly streams live telemetry back to a support vehicle called The Brains, where the strategy team analyses speed, energy levels and solar input alongside real-time weather data to decide exactly how the car should be driven at any given moment.

Take away the connection, and those decisions stop. The car drives blind.

With nine support vehicles spread across up to 100 km of outback, and large sections of the route completely off the mobile network, keeping that data flowing was never going to be straightforward. UHF radio couldn’t cover the distances. Cellular networks disappeared for stretches at a time. And with everything constantly moving, a static solution was never on the table.

The team needed internet connection that could follow them, anywhere, without dropping out.

The Solution: Peplink Across All Nine Vehicles

Frontier EU designed a connectivity setup built around Peplink hardware and Starlink satellite, and deployed it across every vehicle in the convoy.

Each of the nine support vehicles was fitted with a Peplink MAX Transit Duo Pro router, SpeedFusion Cloud to keep critical applications stable, and a Starlink Mini terminal on the roof to maintain satellite connectivity wherever the mobile networks gave up. Nine installations. Forty team members. One seamless network across the entire race route.

The Result: Zero Dropouts. Third Place.

For the full 1,877 miles, the network held. No interruptions. No gaps in the data. The strategy team had everything they needed, in real time, for every kilometre of the race.

Innoptus Solar Team finished 3rd in the Bridgestone World Solar Challenge 2025, and connectivity was never the thing holding them back.

"The technology performed exceptionally well and exceeded all of our expectations. The Brains as well as the other convoy vehicles never experienced a single moment without connectivity. This allows us to look forward to what may be possible in the near future with even greater confidence."
