Smart Informatics enables remote surgical support with Peplink

What if specialist surgical expertise could be available wherever it’s needed? That is the vision behind Smart Informatics’ teleoperation project. The project began in collaboration with T-Mobile and the Military University Hospital in Prague to investigate whether specialist surgeons could remotely support procedures using ultra-high-definition 3D video and real-time communication.

Challenge

Specialist surgeons are not always available where they’re needed most, from military deployments and field hospitals to humanitarian missions and regional healthcare facilities.

Smart Informatics set out to enable real-time remote surgical support using live 4K 3D video, instant communication, and interactive visual guidance.

Making this possible required more than advanced medical technology. The platform needed to deliver high-bandwidth, low-latency, reliable connectivity, even in environments without dependable fixed networks. Creating a portable connectivity solution that medical teams could trust became a critical part of the project.

Solution

Smart Informatics implemented a Peplink-based architecture tailored to Czech TV’s needs. Each OB vehicle was equipped with the HD4 MBX 5G, a high-performance quad-modem router. This device eliminates the need for multiple routers and provides strong, reliable 5G connectivity. Paired with Mobility Antennas selected for space and mounting conditions, it ensured optimal signal reception.

At the broadcast centre, Smart Informatics deployed two SDX Pro routers in High Availability mode. These devices create secure SpeedFusion tunnels between OB vehicles and control rooms, enabling bonded communication and real-time coordination. The entire network is monitored and managed centrally via Peplink’s InControl2 platform.

Result

The project has successfully demonstrated how specialist surgeons can remotely support procedures using live 3D 4K video, real-time communication, and interactive visual guidance.

Each demonstration has helped push the technology further, reducing latency, improving collaboration between surgical teams, and expanding the platform’s capabilities. The project continues to evolve as Smart Informatics works to further optimize performance and user experience.

Smart Informatics also deploys Peplink BR2 Pro routers for remote surgical training, enabling medical students and young surgeons to observe live procedures and communicate directly with surgeons on-site, regardless of location. By combining advanced medical imaging with resilient connectivity, Smart Informatics is helping demonstrate how specialist expertise can become more accessible, wherever it’s needed.
